The 3 Essential Beard Growth Stages Explained

Overview

Many men struggle with growing a beard and blame it on a variety of reasons.

Doing a quick online research about the steps necessary to grow a beard will give you hundreds of shady methods that lack the slightest scientific evidence.

In reality, beard growth stages are what actually determine how thick your beard is. Unfortunately, many people have no idea about these stages

We wanted to do things differently. For this reason, we will only be using evidence-based science to support our claims throughout this article.

By the end of this piece, you will have all the necessary knowledge to grow a long, beautiful beard that restores your self-confidence. Make sure to not skip any section as they are equally important!

The 3 Beard Growth Stages – Beard Hair Growth Cycle

Going back to the basics, your beard and facial hair are just that – hair. In other words, the beard hairs that grow on your face are the same that grow on your scalp.

Therefore, we need to understand the different beard growth stages to identify what could go wrong and how to fix it.

1.     Anagen Phase

The first stage of beard growth is the anagen phase. This phase lasts between 2 to 7 years. Note that the duration of the anagen phase is different depending on the type of hair we’re dealing with.

For example, eyebrow hair tends to have a shorter anagen phase relative to scalp hair.

The anagen phase is characterized by the growth of facial hair follicles, which start pushing out hair strands. These strands will continue to grow until they reach the end of their lifespan or get cut off. Studies estimate that 90% of hair follicles on your beard are in the anagen phase.

2.     Catagen Phase

Unlike the anagen phase, the catagen phase has a really short duration, lasting between 7 to 10 days. When your beard hair reaches the catagen phase, the growth of the strands slows down. The beard hair follicles also shrink.

Another interesting phenomenon is that the beard hair strands detach from the root follicles. Despite that, the strands remain in position until they fall off.

According to studies, facial hair in the catagen phase accounts for up to 5% at any given time.

3.     Telogen Phase

The telogen phase lasts approximately 3 months. During this phase, your facial hair follicles will not grow. Do they fall?

Not really. What happens is that the new hairs form in the follicles, whereas the older strands remain in position waiting to fall off.

Some scientists consider this phase to be the shedding phase. However, there is some debate about this topic.

For this reason, dermatologists came out with a new phase called the exogen phase.

As the name implies, exogen is the time when older facial hair falls off. Approximately 5–10% of your beard hair is generally in the telogen/exogen phases.

What to do at each stage of beard growth?

Understanding beard growth stages is the first step toward getting a full, beautiful beard. However, being passive and waiting for things to happen will not give you the beard of your dreams.

Instead, you need to learn the best practices at each stage to optimize this process as much as possible.

1. Light Stubble

This stage lasts between 7 to 14 days.

Many people find this stage to be the most awkward. It can also be the most uncomfortable. After years of shaving and sharpening the hair, it becomes coarse. Allowing it to grow will irritate the skin, leading to local inflammation and itchiness.

The amount of stubble by the end of the week is a good indication of how quickly your beard will grow.

At this stage, it is important to not shave.

2. Small Patchy Beard growth

This stage covers the 2 weeks after the light stubble.

You will start to see a pattern of facial hair growth. It allows you to tell whether you will be dealing with any patchiness. It may be tempting to trim the parts with hair to make the patchiness less visible. However, this is not good for beard growth. Instead, make sure to keep your beard hydrated and well-nourished.

If your beard remains at this stage for more than 4 weeks, you may want to consider getting the CPH Grooming Sidekick. This supplement contains a variety of nutrients that work in great synergy to promote beard growth. Zinc and biotin are the primary two ingredients.

Remember, it is important to not shave any of your beard yet!

3. Short Beard stage

The short beard stage takes another 2-3 weeks. Once you approach the end of this stage, you should notice significant beard growth. A full beard at this stage is to be expected. However, every man is unique, so you should give it some time.

You can also start styling your beard to your liking. Seek out the help of a good barber to shape your beard.

4. Proper Grooming and Maintenance

The fourth stage of beard growth starts after 6-8 weeks.

Going to the barber again might be necessary at this point. However, what’s really important is taking care of your beard. You should pay great attention to proper maintenance. This includes hydration, proper hygiene, and trimming.

Without taking these steps, you might end up with an awkwardly-looking beard.

If you ever notice that your beard is becoming unruly, you may need some external help. Fortunately, the ZEUS Everyday Beard Grooming Kit contains everything you need to get your beard back on track.

5. The Almighty Beard Stage

Congratulations! You’ve finally made it. A well-deserved full beard!

The almighty beard stage occurs after 10 weeks. The growth of your beard might slow down at this stage.

Your beard is now nicely trimmed, clean, and hydrated. Itchiness is also under control. What’s next? Well, duh! Talking to your crush, of course.

Joking aside, you need to be consistent with grooming and maintenance. Neglecting your beard will do terrible things to it.

Don’t be so hard on yourself, though! You’ve done the work and you deserve a pat on the back.

Other factors that influence beard growth

After covering all the information about the beard growth stages, it’s time to get real. Facial hair growth is subject to several factors that control its rate. Depending on how these factors are impacting you, you will see a faster or slower beard growth rate.

We divide these factors into two main categories – modifiable and nonmodifiable elements.

Age

Facial hair growth peaks during your 30s. As a teen, you might start to see a few strands of hair here and there. However, your beard will not be complete until you get older.

What controls this phenomenon is a variety of factors, including genetics and testosterone levels.

Of course, this rule does have exceptions. We’ve all come across a 17-year-old boy with a complete, thick beard.

Genetics

In the nonmodifiable factors, genetics is the primary controller of your beard’s thickness. If your father and grandfather have thick beards, you are probably going to end up with a thick beard as well.

As you know by now, testosterone is the hormone responsible for male traits, such as facial hair growth and deep voice. To impact the hair follicle, an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

DHT binds to receptors located on the hair follicles to promote their growth. The response to this action, however, is unique to every individual. You see, the sensitivity of DHT receptors to the action of the hormone is controlled by genetics.

Interesting fact: DHT stimulates facial hair growth but inhibits hair follicle growth on your scalp.

Exercise

When you exercise, the blood vessels under your skin expand. The purpose of this expansion is thermal regulation. Differently put, your body uses the vessels to lower its core temperature.

The good news is that vasodilation stimulates beard hair growth.

Another way that exercise may help with the beard growth stages is by temporarily boosting the levels of testosterone.

We should note that testosterone levels fluctuate in young men during the day. They usually peak in the morning and gradually decrease during the rest of the day.

Sleep

Sleep is extremely important for beard growth.

When you sleep, the cells in your testes and adrenal glands release testosterone. Disrupted sleep of any kind can interfere with this process. For this reason, people with sleep apnea and insomnia tend to have facial hair growth issues.

One study found that sleep restriction lowers the levels of testosterone in otherwise healthy men.

We also mentioned above that testosterone levels peak in the morning. According to a study, serum testosterone peaks at the start of the first rapid eye movement (REM) sleep cycle. After that, it remains constant until you wake up.

Testosterone

As a man, having enough testosterone circulating in your blood is extremely important. Testosterone deficiency can negatively impact your life – facial hair will be the least of your concerns!

Obviously, low levels of testosterone equal no/little facial hair growth.

However, you should not obsess about this topic. Unless you have several signs and symptoms that indicate low levels of testosterone, you should focus on the other factors on this list.

Symptoms of low testosterone levels

  • Decreased libido
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Difficulty building lean muscle mass
  • Increased body fat
  • Unexplained fatigue
  • Mood swings and irritability

If you have doubts, you can always get serum testosterone bloodwork. Normal levels of testosterone range from 300 to 1,000 nanograms per deciliter (ng/dL) or 10 to 35 nanomoles per liter (nmol/L).

Do your results fall below the normal range? Make sure to speak with your doctor about available treatments for low testosterone levels.

Unfortunately, some people just suffer from chronic low testosterone levels. To solve this issue, you need something natural. Something that would stimulate your body’s own bio-engines to make testosterone.

You have the cells that produce this hormone. What’s missing is the stimulation!

Enter Testogen.

With hundreds of satisfied customers, Testogen can help grow your beard to its full potential. This product comes in a capsule and drops forms. Optimally, you would get both forms to boost testosterone production.

You need to be patient, however. beard growth takes some time and requires consistency. We always recommend our readers to opt for the 3 Months Supply + 2 Months FREE offer. This will give you 5 months of testosterone-boosting supply at the price of 3.

Still having doubts? The 100-day refund policy of Testogen should put your mind at ease.

Can I grow a beard forever?

Evidence shows that not trimming your beard will allow it to grow for up to 3 feet. Beyond this point, it is unlikely to grow further.

The reason is the beard growth stages. At this point, many facial hair follicles will go from the anagen to the catagen phase, which is where the follicles start to fall off.

In general, it takes 2–4 months to grow a full beard. This rate varies from one man to another. The beard growth timeline is around 6 years. In other words, your beard will not grow longer after 6 years of untrimmed growth.

Conclusion

Understanding beard growth stages is extremely important to get a beautiful beard. If you suffer from low testosterone levels, consider taking the Testogen supplement. However, make sure you do it consistently as facial hair growth takes time.

Do not forget to be attentive to your beard growth. We know it can be difficult to stay motivated and keep track of beard growth. For this reason, we recommend taking before and after photos.
